Just Because

flowers.jpegI love it when my husband buys me flowers. Almost every time he goes to the store, he will pick up a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Sometimes they are roses, sometimes Gerber daisies, and sometimes it’s a mixture of many kinds of flowers including lilies, which are one of my favorites.  Why does he buy me flowers? Just because. Just because he loves me. Just because they brighten up the room. Just because I love fresh flowers. After 36 years of marriage, he still does those little things for me to demonstrate his love for me. I am a very fortunate woman. Jesus also demonstrated his love for us by dying on the cross for us so we can have eternal life with him.  “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). While Jesus was on earth, he demonstrated his love for his disciples by washing their feet. (John 13 )

Jesus loved his disciples and demonstrated his love for them by doing a servant’s job of washing feet. Jesus demonstrated his love to people the whole time he was on earth; he turned water into wine for his mother, he raised a boy from the dead for a widowed woman, he raised Lazarus from the dead for Mary and Martha, he healed the blind, the deaf, the lepers, the demon possessed, all because he loved.

With so much hate and violence in our world today, I would like to challenge us to demonstrate God’s love every day this month. February is thought of as the month of love because of Valentine’s day. God’s word says, “Dear friends, since God loved us, we ought to love one another.”(I John 4:11). I would like to challenge us to show
004i-love-you-5.jpgGod’s love by actively demonstrating his love to at least one person every day this month. “What does that look like?” you may ask? It can be simple things such as texting a friend to let them know you are thinking of them and to wish them a good day; it could be making your spouse’s favorite dish or dessert just because. It could be handing out a little chocolate candy to the store clerk and wishing them a good day. Maybe babysit someone’s children so Mom and Dad could have a date night.  Mow someone’s lawn, bake cookies for your coworkers, do something with your kids that they have been asking you to do. The list is endless. Demonstrate love to those you love the most - your family. Demonstrate love to those you work with on a daily basis. Demonstrate love to the strangers at Starbucks, my favorite, or at the gas station or grocery store.  Ok, here’s a good one. Demonstrate love to the workers at the DMV. That can be a challenge but one I’m sure they would appreciate!

Colossians 4:5 says, “Live wisely…and make the most of every opportunity.” There are people all around us that need to see God’s love and compassion. His love and compassion is shown through us. Our demonstration of love does not need to be elaborate, but just a little something to show someone genuine thoughtfulness, compassion, and love, just because! It may seem like it is “Just Because” to them, but we know we love others because Christ first loved us!

Make the most of every opportunity just because!!!
